As an economic system based on the premise of individuals and companies owning the means and production of goods and services, capitalism is the primary structure of our country.
We are driven for the acquisition of money, yet money is not the win all. What money brings to us is what drives us, and it all begins with The American Dream.
Once placed in our minds, this optimist dream propels us towards wealth, security, comfort, luxury, fame and ultimately freedom.
As capitalists, investment in money is our number one priority. We invest in the stock market. We invest in homes. We invest in properties, coins, stamps and crypto all for an American Dream return on investment. We idolize billionaires for their money not their gifts to humanity.
We are a transitional society, and money is the transitional currency. The value of almost everything is translated into dollars and dollars buy what our hearts desire.
However, the most important thing in our lives does not have a price tag. Happiness cannot be bought which makes capitalism obsolete in this regard. Makes you wonder that capitalism is not what it is cracked up to be.
Psychologists have shown happiness comes from connections. Simply put, these connections are found with other people not with bank accounts or crypto. People are these connections for happiness to perpetuate. So, let’s invest in happiness by investing in people.
Parents invest in people. They invest in their children, and the return on investment is grandkids and ultimately the preservation of our species. To perpetuate our kind is a plus however we will never live to actually appreciate it. Wait, does capitalism preserve our species? If it does anything, it does just the opposite.
Apart from parenting, how else do we invest in people? Volunteering, donating time, listening, paying attention, being present are a few with serving others the ultimate investment.
Serving others includes political representation, military and religious service by preachers, rabis and imams. Ironically, “lawyer-ing” and “doctor-ing” are considered practicing, not serving.
So, does our political representation truly serve us? Are our representatives listening to us, paying attention to us, or showing up for us? Polls show they are not. This is the main reason why we are so disenfranchised with our government. Our representatives are not showing up.
Showing up is being in the community at bake sales, community festivals, 100-year town anniversaries, and parades. Showing up is holding town halls and volunteering at the local food bank. In fact, showing up is the ultimate investment in community.
When we show up, we are supporting, we are investing, and we are the human infrastructure of our community. Showing up does not just show that we care; it shows others matter.
As a currency, time is the most valuable commodity since money is finite leaving time to being infinite. What is a person if not an investment in humanity’s future.
Connections create relationships. Relationships build community. Community fosters trust. And it all begins with showing up. During this holiday season, show up and you will notice something rewarding happening. Others will begin showing up for you as well.

The Bucket and Property Taxes
Two hundred years ago, everyone owned a leather bucket for one purpose only – to put out fires. Back then we were all volunteer firefighters and if our neighbor’s home went up in flames, the community came together. We did not have a tax funded fire department, yet we did have those who came together…

In 1994, Steven Spielberg directed and produced Schindler’s List. A true to life film about Oskar Schindler who saved approximately 1200 Jews during World War II. At the end, Schindler breaks down: “I could have done more. I could have saved more.” There are those among us who have Schindler’s Complex. We feel we have…

When my kids were little and got into trouble, they were sent to time-out. America is in trouble, and the world is sending us to time-out. We have alienated our allies with tariffs. We have spoken ill of our northern neighbor and even demanded they become our 51st state. We have cut children’s cancer research funding. Yet…
